General News · 17th June 2012
There is an important public meeting with Island Timberlands on Tuesday, June 19th at the Gorge Hall from 3-6 pm.
If you have any concerns and questions, or wish to inform yourself about their plans to begin logging their holdings in September, this could be your last chance to express yourself before logging begins.
It is important to have as many people there as we can gather in order to show IT that we are not complacent and that we want more information about long range plans on Cortes. Please think about any questions you need answers to from IT, and make the effort to be at the meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
Some of the topics you may wish to address are:
• protecting water quality
• job opportunities for locals
• use of herbicides on their land,
• plans for reforestation
• quantity of wood to be removed
• traffic safety,
• setbacks from existing waterways and wetlands
• fish and wildlife impact
• effects on tourism
You may have other things to add to the list.
Cortes Islanders will have to live with the effects of Island Timberlands’ activities for a long time. Now is the time to become informed and get the answers you need. See you at the Gorge Hall on Tuesday afternoon (3-6 pm).
