Maria Laffitte came all the way from Spain to play on Cortes. What a treat! Friday at the Gorge Hall, sponsored by the Whaletown Community Association.

Catelan, one of the four languages of Spain, from the NE. centered around Barcelona, of Roman descent, was banned by Franco. When Franco died, Catelan resurged.

Maria and her troubadoors treated us to a two part concert. Songs from their 13th century and secondly, more modern times songs.

While a few were of Spanish sound many were evocative of the Scottish Moors, North African and Irish music The group played a wide viariety of exotic insturuments, Viola diroda (Hurdy Gurdy),Viola, Guitars, Tabla, Tamborina, Recorders, and various percussion instruments.
