VIRL receives structural engineers’ report on Cortes Island Library Branch
NANAIMO, May 24, 2012 – Today Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) staff received the structural engineer’s report on the portion of Manson’s Hall specifically used as the Cortes Island Library. The report was reviewed with Board Chair Ronna-Rae Leonard the same day. Mrs. Leonard recommended the report be shared with Mr. John Sprungman, landlord and President of the Southern Cortes Community Association (SCCA) immediately.
“It was incumbent upon Vancouver Island Regional Library to share the results of the report with the President of SCCA,” said Rosemary Bonanno, Executive Director of Vancouver Island Regional Library. “The opinion of the author of the report, Mr. Eric Heidema, P.Eng. is “that the second floor area of the Manson’s Community Centre is not suitable for occupancy as a library area.”
In the meantime, VIRL staff continue to investigate options for a temporary holds pick up location on Cortes Island.
As announced on May 22nd, negotiations with the Southern Cortes Community Association have ended and VIRL staff will be recommending a Request for Proposals (RFP) process to the Vancouver Island Regional Library Board at its upcoming June 9th Board meeting. The Request for Proposal process aims to identify a long term solution for library services on Cortes Island as quickly as possible.
Vancouver Island Regional Library is committed to providing an environment for library services on Cortes Island that is appealing, comfortable, inviting and safe.
