Leila & Allan Campbell
We are Leila and Allan Campbell, retired, living at our homestead on Cortes Island.
Our purpose in writing is to protest the sudden, immediate, closing of the Cortes Library, without notice to, or consultation with, library users. And there are many of us, children and adults, from all over the island.
We’re at the library almost every week, along with a lot of others, collecting books and DVD’s we’ve ordered, looking at what’s on the shelves, consulting reference works, going online. The place is always busy.
This closure, implemented, presumably, on your authority, is inexplicable, a kick in the face of islanders.
Our alternative is two ferry trips away, the Vancouver Island Regional Library at
Campbell River. That’s essentially an all-day trip at a hefty ferry cost.
We urge you to direct VIRL to re-open our library at once. If the library’s longer- term status involves issues we users don’t know about, please direct VIRL to bring them to the attention of the community.
