Without any warning whatsoever, VIRL telephoned the Cortes librarian Friday afternoon and instructed her to close the library immediately. When contacted later they advised that they would be removing all material next week.

The reason given is that the floor does not meet their load-bearing requirement. They also cited an alert by WorkSafe BC concerning mezzanines. WorkSafe has nothing to do with the closure. It is completely an arbitrary decision of VIRL. They have had their engineer's report for over two years saying the floor doesn't meet their requirement. The position is ridiculous considering the actual traffic. I have no doubt that the report can be disputed by any clear thinking individual.

Coincidently, the new library committee, which has been negotiating the building of and leasing to VIRL of a new library meeting their requirements, met with VIRL earlier this week & put forward their needs. The VIRL representative was not happy with the figure.

This closure would seem to be the result.
