General News · 25th April 2012
Over the course of the past several weeks, many community members have expressed concern over the lack of official information provided by the RCMP in relation to the fatal collision that occurred on Sutil Point Road on March 3, 2012. The lack of any formal announcement or media release was, at the time of the investigation, an oversight.
The Quadra Island RCMP can confirm that a report of a serious, single vehicle collision was reported at 10:56 PM on March 3, 2012. British Columbia Ambulance Service, Cortes Island Volunteer Fire Department and the RCMP attended the scene. Upon arrival by emergency crews, the lone occupant of the vehicle was determined to be in very serious condition and was being prepared to be transported from Cortes Island by Air Ambulance. Unfortunately, the lone occupant of the vehicle died prior to being transported by the Air Ambulance. The investigation into the cause of the crash, including the actions and activities of the deceased prior to the crash, was conducted in partnership with RCMP Traffic Services and the BC Coroner's Service. There is no evidence to believe there were any other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash and the RCMP are confirming that the vehicle involved had been stolen from the Manson's Landing Hall shortly prior to the crash. There is evidence to believe the deceased may not have been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and the RCMP are reminding community members about the importance of wearing your seatbelt at all times. While toxicology results from the deceased are pending, no charges, as a result of this tragic crash, will be laid.
