Many thanks to all who attended the harbour cleanup on Sunday! It was a glorious day and we had a determined crew. Of course the event started off with a staunch reminder of why we do these cleanups - the barge where we load up the debris was disabled on its trip across the harbour by a piece of black polypropylene line in the propellor!
Thank you to everyone who pitched in - the harbour benefits from your efforts. Thank you Hubert Havelaar and DFO for obtaining the assistance of John Vosper and his excavator. This allowed us to sift through the mix of beach debris to pull out the non-biodegradable plastics and styrofoam.
It was a long day, but in the end three large truckloads of debris were removed - that was after useable material was removed for repurposing. Thank you to John Shook, Michael Hoskin and Henry Verschuur for allowing us the use of their trucks to haul the debris away. And a huge thanks to our midden keepers at the Recycle Centre. Each year Dova accommodates us, even when we're outside of regular hours. And finally thanks to the Gorge Harbour Marina for hosting the barbecue to help feed our hungry crew!
So here's too a wonderful summer of boating, swimming, paddling and harvesting!
