In 2005, the Regional District created and imposed the AQ2A Aquaculture zone in response to a request for a new shellfish operation in Gorge Harbour. This zoning prohibits the use of powered machinery in these zones in recognition of the inappropriateness of mechanized shellfish industry in Gorge Harbour. On January 14th at the Gorge Hall, there will be a public hearing on the Klahoose application to the Regional District to establish yet another new and massive shellfish lease in Gorge Harbour for another 90 rafts in a 27 acre site using power machinery and equipment. Those who care about the rural quality of life that is supposed to be protected in the Cortes OCP are urged to attend this important meeting.
