After a year of consultation with Cortes non-profit boards, one of the key requests for inter-organizational collaboration was to provide board development training. Yesterday, thanks to funds from the Campbell River Foundation and Cortes Literacy Now, we hosted the first of at least two workshops in this Board Development Workshop Series. Thanks also to Ester for writing the CR Foundation grant to make this work happen. (for the WCC in conjunction with the SCCA) Meaghan Cursons, a board development trainer from Cumberland, led 21 workshop participants through the basics of a functional board. Many community boards were represented and everyone took something useful away to share with their organizations.

The next session in this workshop series is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th and will be taught by Marjorie Driscoll, Executive Director of Volunteer Nanaimo. It will build to some degree on Meaghan’s session and be shaped by input from yesterday’s participants on how to dig deeper into issues of interest. If you are on a board and could not make yesterday’s session, or are considering joining a board, registration is open to everyone. To sign up, please contact Coreen Boucher, cortesliteracytwincomm.ca or 250-935-0152. Lunch is included and childcare will be provided as needed.

Thanks to all you participated, and to all who serve our community through volunteer work.
