Cortes Island School
Cortes Island School is pleased to announce the appointment of Darlene Smith as principal. Darlene was born and raised on the prairies of Saskatchewan. As a “small town” girl Darlene understands and values community. Deeply connected to land and animals, Darlene looks forward to building a new life and relationships with Cortes. She is joined by her partner Michael Horgan, an educator, photographer and writer.
During Darlene’s career she has been a successful special educator, classroom teacher, cognitive coach, instructional leader, district coordinator and middle school administrator. She holds both a masters degree and staff development certification. Darlene is a challenger of the status quo and is excited about working creatively with students, families and staff to ensure student needs are met.
Darlene describes herself as, “ born to be an educator.” Her student centered approach to education , her adaptability in meeting student needs and her previous leadership experience will be a welcome addition to our school. The core values of the Cortes Island School, resonate with her own beliefs, specifically; learning, community connectedness, a kind and caring environment, respect and appreciation of diversity, sustainability and respect.
Darlene and Michael are excited to soon be meeting the parents and students and the larger Cortes Island Community. Darlene will be arriving mid-August. The school office (6313) will be open the week before school, which begins on Tuesday, September 6. Darlene is excited to meet and answer any questions you may have.
