I have been a residential building contractor on Cortes Island since 1995 when I formed the company Blue Moon Woodworks, but my fascination with wood actually began when I was a kid. Even then, I understood how wood could be crafted into whatever I wanted it to be and I’m still inspired by the process of turning the raw material into something both purposeful and aesthetically pleasing.
It was in 1980 that I chose to work in the carpentry field full time. By then I’d experienced wood from the points of view of tree planter and small mill operator. I’d worked in a prefabricated home factory and completed small building projects. I’ve even built sets for a movie company in Vancouver. I had the good fortune to be employed by a contractor who built custom homes and that gave me the opportunity to learn the trade with a crew of experienced carpenters. In 1990, another builder and I designed and crafted a few homes and I’ve been hooked ever since. There is so much pride in taking a project from the idea on paper stage to a finished home that customers are happy with.
I learn new things with each home I’m contracted to build or renovate. My crew is largely comprised of journeyman carpenters and they are an asset to both the projects we work on and my company. Some of the crew has been with me since my company was formed in 1995.
Now that I’ve built and renovated numerous homes from the more simple to the multi-faceted and complex, I find myself, once again, drawn to architectural design. As I continue to learn from other builders, my crew, publications, and seminars the art of the contracting business, I plan to further develop my design ability.
One of the best parts about being a contractor is the anticipation of the process to come. Once the design and plans commandeer my mind I become completely engaged in the building strategy, sequencing the work, coordinating with customers, architects, crew, and sub-trades and investigating the special features of the project. During quiet moments of observation on the job site when the current challenges have been overcome, the crew is hard at work, and everything is flowing well, I allow myself a moment to feel grateful. The vision I hold in my mind is coming together.
The ultimate goal is a satisfied customer. I like to accommodate as much as possible to achieve this goal. Customer relations continue beyond the initial building or renovating of their home as well to include adjustments, maintenance, and additions. I’ve found that new projects often spring from my customers’ recommendation. Potential customers are welcome to visit the job site for a tour and tours of completed projects can be arranged upon request. Please call me on my cell at 250-203-0052 for a consultation or to view some of my work.
I came to Cortes Island for a visit in 1972. As I liked both the natural aspects of the Island and the community, the Island became my home. I like knowing the people around me and I have well-established connections in all parts of the building industry. I am available to help you turn your dream into reality whether you want to modify an aspect of your present home or build a new home, studio, or guest cottage from the ground up.
