General News · 10th December 2010
Hello Cortes Island,
Friends of Cortes Island Society held their Annual General Meeting on November 28th at the Gorge Hall. We celebrated 20 years of being a registered society.
There was a great turn out of close to 40 people. We packed a lot in to 3 hours.
For those of you that missed the event or are just curious about what it is all about, here is an account of how we spent our time.
We started with renewing membership, taking new membership and having some social time. We attended to some FOCI business matters – the president’s report and the financial picture. We heard reports from the various working groups under the umbrella of FOCI. We had a homemade jam tasting party and had valuable world café style conversation about the future of FOCI. We celebrated David Rousseau, winner of this years Jo-Ann Green award, and said a sad/fond farewell to Norberto, long time board member. Finally, we elected the new board of directors.
We have a new board of directors for the 2010/11 year.
We welcome Myann Wooley, Chris Walker and Kate Maddigan to the board. Romina Wendall, Max Thaysen and Fred Savage are returning board members.
We extend great thanks to Norberto Rodriguez de la Vega, Mark Lombard and Maria McKenty for their time and energy that they have put into their role as directors over the years. They are now off to do other great things.
Current FOCI working groups and their leaders are:
Marine Stewardship - Sabina Leader-Mense
Wolf Project - Sabina Leader-Mense
Kw'as & Carrington Bay Parks - Ryan Harvey and Alex Bernier
Trail Mapping - Conrad Dombrowski & Shane Stevens
Watershed Sentinel Magazine - Delores Broten
Youth Initiative - Lee Reidl
Capacity Building / Community Fundraising - Sandra Wood
Cortes Housing Initiative - Sandra Wood
Literacy Now - Sarah O'Shannessy
With a reduction in government funding we are finding it a greater challenge to maintain the office and support the working groups. Donations are very welcome at this time. Your donation would go towards the office basics including paying phone and hydro bills, rent, printer ink, employment for 10 hours a week of office management, bookkeeping program and financial review. We manage to cover many of our costs including resource library management on a volunteer basis.
Please consider donating to FOCI in this tax year. FOCI really needs monetary Christmas presents right now! We are a registered charity and would be very happy to give you a charitable tax receipt by the end of December 2010 for any donations that come in the next 2 weeks. Payments can be made by visiting the bank on Cortes and transferring money to the FOCI chequing account (though leave us a message with your details so we can send you a tax receipt) You can also write a cheque made out to: FOCI and mail to the address below. Alternatively, call Sarah at the office to make other arrangements.
On the subject of volunteering, if you are a FOCI member that has a keen interest in our library, please consider volunteering to be in the FOCI resource library once in a while on Fridays when we are open to the public from 1-4pm. Keeping the library open for all to access is now dependant on whether or not volunteers from the FOCI board or membership step forward to do this. If you are interested please contact Sarah at 935-0087 and she will give you a tour of the office. In our experience, Friday afternoons at FOCI are fun. You can expect great people and great conversations about interesting things. P.S. The office will be closed for holidays on Friday December 24th and 31st
Happy winter season everybody and best wishes!
Sarah Downey, Myann Wooley, Kate Maddigan, Chris Walker, Max Thaysen, Fred Savage, Romina Wendell
