Klahoose First Nation
On September 23, 2010, Klahoose Council member, Jessie Louie attended the signing of the third Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement with School District #72. Klahoose Education Coordinator, Julie Hanuse was also in attendance at this gala event hosted by the Aboriginal Advisory Council.
The agreement is the cornerstone of a partnership between the local First Nations in School District #72. The focus of this agreement is to clearly identify the needs of First Nation learners while respecting and upholding cultural and language priorities within each territory. The signing took place in the Big House on the Wei Wai Kum First Nation.
Highlights of the agreement:
•The agreement is intended to continually improve the quality of education achieved by all Aboriginal students;
•Support strong cooperative, collaborative relationships between Aboriginal communities and school districts;
•Provide Aboriginal communities and districts greater autonomy to find solutions that work for Aboriginal students, the schools and the communities; and
•Require a high level of respect and trust to function.
“I was honoured to be a part of this important event.” said Jessie Louie.
