Our road foreman John Missent told me today (Sept. 15) that the barge with gravel to prep the larger sections of broken pavement is due to arrive at the Gorge log dump Friday. According to Max Walker, there was a delay because the barge operator who was scheduled to haul the gravel from Texada two weeks ago reneged at the last minute.
The grader and 3 tandem dump trucks are on the island. The grader is working on the road up from the log dump to the main road in preparation for hauling gravel to the maintenance yard. A loader is arriving today, and there will be another one on the barge. As soon as the base is ready, weather permitting, Emcon will begin hauling hot mix asphalt from Vancouver Island. Meanwhile, many of the smaller damaged spots have been patched.
The white spray paint around some bad spots, especially along Bartholomew Road, is the handiwork of locals, not the road crew or MOTI, so it does not necessarily mean that these spots are priorities for repair. The markings are helpful, though, in avoiding tire damage.
