The purpose of writing this letter is to add my voice to the many voices of our community who would like to see Dr. Kirstie Overhill reinstated as Cortes’ general practitioner. I am writing both as a member of our community and as a psychiatrist who had the honor of working side-by-side with Dr. Overhill once a week at the Cortes Health Center as colleagues during the period of time between July 2006 and September 2009. I moved from Baltimore, Maryland, USA to Cortes Island, BC in the summer of 2006: Dr. Overhill became my guide to the cultural, legal, and regulatory norms I needed to know as well as how best to serve this island community.
I appreciate how direct and honest she is with people about all the most difficult imaginable situations. She is accessible and generous of spirit and compassionate in ways I have rarely met in other physicians. Her caring for people is personal and life-affirming. She was willing to question herself and be open to discussion when we had differences of opinion.
Dr. Overhill has given heart and soul to this community and founded the health centre, making it what it is today. Any other physician trying to take her place would have second thoughts given the treatment the health centre board has given her. If such drastic measures are being taken, the only way that the board can maintain a trust with the community is to be completely transparent as to why they are doing so. To do anything other than being open and transparent in the decision making process would be not honoring of the real relationship that the community has with Dr. Overhill.
