ELEKWENT FOLK are a trio of emcees/musicians hailing from Vancouver BC consisting of members AstroLogic, A-Ro, & Slippery Elm. Free-spirited and spontaneous, jazzy and eclectic, poignant and insightful—these emcees are far from cookie-cut; smashing stereotypes, resisting pressures to conform, and all the while nimbly slipping between genres like a shaman slips between ours and the Otherworld. These are the urban bards of today: a new incarnation of seer-poets and word-guru’s, reclaiming hip-hop as a genre from the stagnant, commercially-obsessed mainstream. Their live show is red-hot and highly danceable—celebrating “the Funk” which, to EF, is an expression of life force.
In November of 2009 the group came first place in a contest put on by Prince Po of hip-hop super-group Organized Konfusion, winning a record deal with Prince Po’s label—Nasty Habits Entertainment. Since winning the contest, they co-founded a Vancouver musical collective called VanTastic, and are currently working closely with friend and mentor Prince Po. Fuelled by their love of life, music, and language, Elekwent Folk are determined to continue making positive music—music made BY the Folk, FOR the folk.
Hope to see you there!
