Hello Cortes Community,

I hope your summer is going well. With a late start the Cortes Summer Youth Recreation Program is nevertheless rolling well. Our swimming classes were a success and our Circus Camp with Kaya Kehl is doing very well. The children are working hard in preparations for the Friday 1:30 show. Show your support and come join us for this free show! We have still room a few spaces for participants for Soccer Camp, the Sports Camp, Ceramics and Sushi Class. We are still calling on any other skilled community members to offer workshops. We have insurance cover till the end of August so the more the merrier!

I have been told by the families who have taken part how they really appreciate this program and I believe more local children would benefit from this program if we had additional funds to support their enrollment. Yet with no government/tax support or umbrella charitable status to support the workshops we need to raise $1000 towards student bursary/scholarships to enable local island children to participate. However from the individual contributions made by Susan Perl, Karen Orff, Laura MackMumford, and John Findlay’s friend we now have cash donations of $220! Thank you so much for your show of support. So with this “seed” money we are building an amazing raffle basket and offering $5.00 raffle tickets for this truly wonderful prize.

So if you can appreciate the efforts of the CISYRP to provide local children the opportunity to learn positive social skills and have fun please show your support. . As all good educators and parents know when a community supports children, children gain the sense of belonging and values. I believe Cortes is a community that strive to support healthy happy families.

You can make direct deposits funds to our Community Account c/o Coastal Community Credit Union CISYRP or purchase raffle tickets.

This amazing raffle basket is a showcase for local community businesses: family swim passes at the Gorge Harbor Marina, wearable art from the Belcourts, delectable edibles from the CNFC, Children/Teen books from Marnie’s Books and the Vancouver Regional Library and video from Reel Youth. And this basket is growing!

Filled with gift certificates and other tangible non-perishable goodies this basket will be presented on Friday August 6th at the Circus Camp free family and friend show 1:30-2:30,the Friday Market at Manson’s Hall and Saturday Market at the Gorge Harbor Marina till August 27 draw date.

Please help celebrate our children, and enter to win an amazing raffle basket stuffed with goodies for the whole family. Cortes is an awesome community, Rock on!
