The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) Directors are questioning their newly drafted Bylaw No. 75 that asks all electoral Cortes Island residents to vote in a referendum on establishing “a service for providing financial support for community halls on Cortes Island.”
The SRD has recently been flooded with oppositional letters and in person presentations requesting them to stop the bylaw process. The SRD directors have received 130 form letters from Cortes islanders all saying no to tax support for the community halls. Although the SRD Directors are aware of the results of the SCCA AGM ballots, they are becoming concerned with the volume of opposition and the lack of a voice of support.
That the ‘tax issue’ has been contentious, some would say divisive, to the community is something everyone can agree on. This makes it imperative that the whole island be heard from in a referendum vote this fall to make it clear how each Cortes Island resident stands on the issue. The referendum is a democratic process and we would like to see everyone's voice be heard equally.
NOW is time to show your support in writing to the SRD. If you are unsure of where you stand but want the referendum to proceed, write to them and let them know! If you know you are in support of the proposed Bylaw No. 75, write to them and let them know!
Please email administrationstrathconard.ca or write to the address below with your message of support. This will help the SRD directors rest assured that the referendum is the right course of action.
