The Cortes Climate Action Team (CCAT) has delivered the Recommendations report to the SRD.
The CCAT, a small volunteer group reporting to our Regional Director, was formed in 2009 with the mandate of making recommendations to the SRD on greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction strategies for our island.
There are several GHG commitments and legislations at the provincial level to reduce carbon emissions. Most important are the BC Climate Action Charter (endorsed by the SRD on October 2007) and Bill 27 that requires local governments to set targets and policies for GHG emissions in their OCPs.
This process included the preparation of a GHG inventory (finished on October, 2009), followed by several community consultations, months of research and team meetings to select the most feasible projects. It was not an easy task to make the selection from so many ideas from the community, close to 200, (included at Appendix B in the report). Thanks a lot to all of you for this remarkable participation!
The next implementation steps will be directed by the SRD, via local organizations and individuals as project managers and implementors, and with continuous involvement from the community.
