STEWARDS OF GORGE HARBOUR SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT
MAY 15 13:00 AT GORGE HALL
SPEAKER: JODY WEIR
TITLE: Undersea Predators: Techniques and Strategies for Catching Prey in a Changing Marine Environment
At this very moment in the waters surrounding Cortes Island, undersea predators are hunting for food. They give birth, raise their young, and court potential mates. This occurs largely out of sight of the terrestrial mammals living on the island. Jody will take us on a journey to a very small community in New Zealand. Here, there have been numerous behavioural studies into the interactions among foraging dolphins, fur seals, sharks and seabirds, and between these undersea predators and existing mussel farms. We will look at the way dolphins, fur seals, seabirds, and sharks detect, locate and capture prey in this exceptionally productive area. Then we will look at how their hunting behaviour is modified by the presence of mussel farms.
So grab a pair of goggles and fins, take a big huge breath, and let’s all look at our waters through the lens of an undersea predator.
