On April 15, 2010 the first OCP kickoff event for Phase Two took place at the Gorge Hall. Approximately 45 Cortes Island residents took part in the evening event that featured interactive activities that engaged the public in reflecting and commenting on the current OCP as well as visioning next steps. We also heard from Phase One presenters regarding key findings from research conducted in the community on key issues including housing, water, seniors and green house gas emissions.

A big “Thank you” to Lisa Jo and the rest of her crew for cooking an amazing pasta dinner featuring lots of local ingredients.

On April 16th, the FOCUS team visited Cortes Island School and Linnaea School for an OCP youth expression session. Thanks to all of the teachers and staff for providing the class time to do the OCP based activities. Also, many thanks to all the youth who contributed their ideas and thoughts about what they love about Cortes and how to make Cortes the best island ever.

On Saturday the 17th the Age Friendly team (Brenda, Sandra and Sarah O’) put together a fun interactive morning of events at the Gorge Hall. Findings from their previous research were shared and new ideas were generated around the issues of home support and transportation.

Please check out the OCP website at to see the results of these events or link to the OCP website from the tideline. The site will continually be updated with new information and will provide a forum for community input as well. There is also a link to the OCP website at the top right side of the front page of the Tideline. For those that are not computer users, have a look at the display board in Manson’s Hall and we will also continue to share information in the flyer.

Next Steps:

There are several ways to be involved.

If you are a part of an established group or organization on the Island, please take the time to contribute your thoughts & ideas to the OCP. Contact Sarah about setting up a time to share information with the FOCUS team.

Ground-swell discussions. Host your own OCP review event. It can be anything you want it to be (dance party, beachfire, tea & cookies…you name it). Pick a topic that you are interested in learning about as a group and that you feel is an important piece of Cortes Island. Before you begin, contact Sarah, who will provide you with support for how to record the data that you collect.

Sign up for a workgroup café. The work group cafes will be small gatherings made up of people with mixed demographics and will look at policy actions using an integrative lens. We have begun to compile a list of contact information for individuals that are interested in getting together to discuss specific issues such as zoning, aquaculture, forestry, housing and food security. If this interests you, please sign up by calling or emailing Sarah, or find a sign up sheet posted at Manson’s Hall.

Participate on the Cortes Community plan website.

The website offers Cortes Island residents the opportunity to share a comment, upload a photo/video, and review up to date OCP content electronically. We encourage residents to take advantage of this resource and provide comments, feedback and content whenever possible. You can refresh your knowledge about the existing OCP by clicking on the link at the Cortes Community Plan website. Alternately you can find copies of the OCP in the public library or the FOCI resource centre.

Contact an OCP team representative directly. Phone calls, emails or personal interviews are all encouraged.

We recognize that not everyone comes out to meetings and that all Cortes Island residents should have the opportunity to voice their opinion. If there is something that you care about, please feel free to share that information with the FOCUS team.
