General News · 7th January 2010
In response to the February 2009 British Columbia Supreme Court (BCSC) decision regarding aquaculture, the Federal Department of Fisheries on Oceans (DFO) has been given an official mandate to proceed with the development of a new Regulation for aquaculture in BC.
A series of meetings are being planned to discuss and gather input from all potentially impacted stakeholders for the development of a new regulation for aquaculture in BC.
All stakeholders are invited to attend the pre-consultation meeting for the marine shellfish sector on the West Coast, scheduled to be held on January 19th & 20th, 2010 in Courtenay, BC at the Crowne Isle Resort. A draft agenda is attached.
A discussion document (see attached) has been developed by DFO to explore various topics and seeks contribution from groups and individuals with an interest in the subject. Answers to the strategic questions found there within will constitute the core discussions at the upcoming meeting.
It should be noted that pre-consultation meetings to engage First Nations and other aboriginal groups will be held in parallel during the process; however this invitation has been extended to all groups wishing to attend the general all stakeholders session.
If you want to attend, please contact Tim Willis (timothy.willisdfo-mpo.gc.ca or 613-949-3128) at DFO by Friday January 15th, 2009.
