Durable Highfire Stoneware for the Ultimate in Cookware
Functional ware with an element of Uniqueness!!

The Start: 1950’s
The discovery of clay in a river bed in Port Hardy at the age of eight led, instead of whittling in wood, to carving blocks of clay into hardly discernible objects.
Child’s play.

The Resurgence: 1970
In University, a chance visit to the Art Department resulted in adding a new major—Art Education with emphasis in Ceramics (pottery, sculpture, and jewellery making)

The Discoveries: 1972
My wife Karen and I moved to Prince Rupert where I worked in recreation, commercial fishing, then teaching art at a Junior High. That’s where I began experimenting with glazes from various sources of clay—the best being a glaze made from clay left on my boat anchor!

The growth: 1974

Quit a good paying job to move to Cortes, homesteaded, built an oil-fired kiln fuelled by furnace oil burners, and began in earnest to become a production potter along with commercial fishing after a two-year’s teaching at the school.

The Peak: 1984
A move to the Comox Valley with Karen, Todd & Patrick (our sons), got us involved with the Arts Alliance and the early development of the Filberg Festival. A collaborative working relation was struck with First Nations Artist, Billy Helin, for and with whom I produced a variety of Raku forms.

The Return: 2004
We packed up the bricks, yet again, which I had originally salvaged from an old foundry in Vancouver in 1975 and moved back to Cortes, built a house, and finally completed the studio in ‘07 and built my fourth kiln. I am no longer a production potter, but rather a person creating basic, high-fire stoneware for functional and decorative forms for local markets and Tofino Markets, where my older son and his wife live and work.

My Studio is open for drop-in visits and friendly conversations.
