OPEN FIRE RESTRICTED IN COASTAL FIRE CENTRE
Effective at noon on June 3 until further notice Category 1 and 2 Open Fires are prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. Campfires are exempted from this restriction, and are permitted.
A Category 1 fire refers to a fire that burns piled material no larger than one metre high and one metre wide.
A Category 2 fire means an open fire that burns piled material no larger than two metres high and three metres wide, or grass over an area less than 0.2 hectares (2,000 square metres) in size.
The fire ban applies to all private land outside organized areas, B.C. parks and public land. Within municipalities and regional districts their burning bylaws take precedence. The fire restrictions have been put in place due to the dry, warm weather that has hit Vancouver Island over the past couple of weeks.
The number of fires in the Coastal Fire Centre has been double what is usually seen, and all but one were person-caused.
To report a wildfire or unattended campfire call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks.
