Cortes Community! Thank you for all your donations, the 2nd shipment of clothes has been sent! Here is a thank you letter for the first shipment from Jackie, the Safe House mother in Cape Town (using her words + spelling).
Dear Rayan, Lovena and all the people of Cortes Island, Thank you all so very much for your kindness and all the clothes, shoes and linen which you sent me. I can not believe how kind you are to us.
The Safe House is going well even though we are also living in the same room, since we no longer have a home. We had a 3 week old baby for a month, his mother had abandoned him. His face, hands and skin were quite white so we gave him the name "Baas" - Rayan must escplain that to you. We miss him so much - the Police found his mother.
We are very grateful to you all. May God bless you.
With all our love Jackie and the children of Safehouse Strand - Uthando Lwabantwana

You will read in her letter that she no longer has a home and herself is living in the Safe House. Her home burned down in a township fire, started at a neighboring property. She and her family got out with their lives and the clothes on their backs.

This is when we decided to send clothes for the first time. The clothes were first being used to clothe her family, the children who come to the Safe House and anyone in need. (Jackie is a pillar of her community and always helps those in need)
The rest of the clothes she will sell to raise money for the running of the Safe House and rebuilding her home. We realize sending clothes is a great way of "sending money". As Jackie sells them, she earns money over time, rather than a lump sum, and it is earned on her own, giving her more pride and confidence.

If anyone is interested in donating money, however, we would gratefully accept. Sending a shipment to Africa costs approx $700. A huge thank you to Barbara Buffington who largely funded the first shipment! Great thanks to Ann Fulton and Alan and Leila Campbell who donated money for this second shipment.
We are so GRATEFUL to all of you who have supported this project over the last 4 years!
