Cortes Island Volunteer Fire Department Live Fire Training

On Saturday May 09, 2009, the Klahoose First Nations Band made a condemned house available to the CIVFD for a live fire training day. It was an invaluable training resource that allowed the fire department to practice the various elements that make up a fire scène. Some examples of this are Incident Command, Fire Ground Safety, Water Supply, Rescue Operations and Offensive and Defensive Fire Suppression Operations. We also invited The BC Ambulance Service and the Justice Institute, Emergency Medical Responder Trainees to take part in this exercise, they took vitals on the Fire Fighter's before, during and after to determine the stress levels of each Fire Fighter and rehabilitate as needed. This was a very exciting and successful drill.

I would like take this opportunity to thank the Klahoose community for their generosity and patience. Thank you to the BC Ambulance service and the Emergency Medical Responder Trainees for their participation and last but absolutely not least the Cortes Island Fire Department Volunteers, all of you that continually offer your time and abilities are to be commended, congratulated, and thanked profusely on a regular basis by the whole of the Cortes Community. You are an amazing group of individuals and team players.

Bruce Brown, Fire Chief, C.I.V.F.D.
