After we had the community meeting with Island Timberlands, on early July 2008, Sabina Leader-Mense called me with the idea of doing an art show at our little SchoolHouse gallery, where we could express our feelings, wishes, visions and reverence for those lands, in a form of a prayer.
I immediately liked the idea, and the rest is history. Last couple of days the gallery was converted in an amazing place for the Prayer for the Forest show. We had art works from more than 75 people, including all the children from Linnaea and Cortes Island Schools. Besides this incredible display, we had the participation of 15-20 performers and musicians. The total active participants to the show was close to 100, a record for the gallery !
The attendance for both days was spectacular, we couldnt accommodate one more soul in the gallery. We need to congratulate ourselves for this heartfelt expression of A Prayer for the Forest. The participation and attendance to this event showed, one more time, the incredible community spirit we have in Cortes Island.
Key individuals that made this event happen are: Suzan Dennis, that coordinated all the performers and musicians. Christine Robinson that coordinated the participation of the schools, her work with the Linnaea kids was fantastic. Janet Turpin, Lynne Barker and Meinsje for their help in setting the show. Janet and Lynne managed to bring Nature into the gallery in an inspiring way. Big thank you to all of them.
Thanks to all the artists and the community, and why not, thanks to Island Timberlands, that brought all of us together for this beautiful event.
