A good crowd turned out for the Annual Members show, “Space” Friday evening despite the hot weather and a myriad of events all over Cortes. Curated this year by Laura Balducci, the show had a wide range of media from 28 members; -paintings, photos, sculpture, doll making, mats and rug. The only venues missing were fabric arts and pottery.

Pointing out several of the members will give you a hint and perhaps lead you to visit or re-visit the show with experienced eyes. The show starts with the enigmatic, unfinished, triptych in the entry way by Kristen Scholfield-Sweet and with a signifying rainbow watercolor by Carol Trueman. (Subtly, Ms Balducci arranged the show based on the rainbow colors, starting on the north wall by the entry with red, then moving through the spectrum in a clockwise direction. (Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet))

The trio of Dolls, collectively constructed by, “A Trio by Three Space Cadets”, Donna Naven, Meinsje Vlaming and Kathleen Pemberton is particularly heart warming. The Heron painting, “Pools Among Us” exhibits Lisa Gibbons at her best, combining imagery and a bravado painting style to the point of transcendence. It is known that Lisa gives wonderful, inspiring painting classes and two of her one time students, Dana Davis and Caz Radcliffe exhibit strong paths from those lessons with their paintings clearly standing on their own. Kathleen Horne’s two Mandala’s are exquisite, and the two large paintings by Monica Beale are spectacular.

Donna Naven has two rock solid :-) sculptures that rival the best from around the world irregardless of culture. Two new exhibiting members, Linda Rose-Yetich and Diane Daly expand the “art” umbrella using two very different medias. One, crochet, in “Memories of the Old Schoolhouse” and the other in a mat and a runner. The runner harkens to Art Nouveau of the 1890s and the mat to the 1950s in New York, Abstract Expressionism”, ala Mark Rothko.

And you probably missed seeing... Hanna Petkau’s mini banner and found objects cards ;-)

I’ve only touched on 12 of the 28 participating members. I invite you to come see the show this weekend and next. I am grateful I live and participate on this talented island. Thanks to all the people who support this gallery and the arts on Cortes.
