A big thankyou to all involved in the 1st Annual Not So Young Musicians Concert that was held on April 28th. It was a great success in that we got the word out about the Young Musicians Bursary Program, we raised $680 after expenses, to go toward the Bursary Program and we came together to share our many varied musical talents! The heart of the concert really was an expression of how playing music is a love, a way of life, a passion. Regardless of style, it is a balm that heals.
We were very pleased to have members of the Klahoose First Nation performing in, and attending this concert and we are so grateful for the opening song: ʔiʔ qʷayigən – Good Feeling with Rose Hanson, Jacqueline Mathieu, Jeannie Hanuse, Brenda Hanson, Brittany Baxter, Rick Bockner, Mary Clare Preston and Melanie Bagley. This song is “a meditation on respecting each other, finding belonging, and responding with Joy” and was composed through a collaborative process between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples who are part of Our Island Community
We live in such uncertain times. So much of what we need to do as a society is put our love and energy into the youth. We need to ask ourselves are we going to go to an even darker place, or are we going to lift each other up and go to a place of hope and healing. Music can be such a big part of that. Through the Young Musicians Bursary Program I hope we can do that a little bit.
So here are some more thankyous to performers from the Not-So-Young Musicians Concert:
Dietrich and Irmgard Shwarz
Elisabeth Jaegar and Laurel Bohart
