Wild Salmon
Art Exhibit

An invitation to artists in all media to create works on the theme of the circumstances of wild salmon.
• Where do the five different species of Pacific salmon spend their lives?
• What is it like to be a wild salmon today?
• What is happening to wild salmon habitat?
• What are the obstacles that wild salmon must overcome to survive today compared to a hundred years ago?
For over a century and a half, there has been a quandary regarding the taking of wild salmon for food and the management of the salmon runs.
Artists are invited to tell this story, raise the questions and issues of environment and management. This is an opportunity to look closely at our relationship with the wild salmon.
Curated by Martha Abelson. A juried exhibition. Questions? Contact Martha at 935-6795 or via email

SPAWNING STREAMS

The presence of healthy, productive, spawning and rearing habitat is the primary requirement for the continued existence of wild salmon. Local traditional and current knowledge is an important method in determining the current status of these habitats; as well as to the present and past levels of use these habitats support.
The Cortes Museum Society, as part of its upcoming exhibit: "Celebrating Wild Salmon; The Cortes Island Experience", wishes to compile local information about the use of our streams by spawning adult, and juvenile

wild salmon.
If you know of streams, which are currently, or have in the past, supported wild salmon populations please share this information with us. We would also appreciate information you may have, regarding Cortes Island habitats that have been negatively impacted.
This information will be compiled by the Museum Society to be used in the exhibit; and possibly to assist in the management and restoration of Cortes Island wild salmon habitat. Please contact  Scott Herron at 935-6711 or email herron@island.net.

As part of our Celebrating Wild Salmon exhibit the museum is collecting Cortes Islander's recipes for preparing and preserving wild salmon. Share your experience of enjoying salmon from the fire circle to the appetizer tray. We will be putting together a wild salmon cookbook with our Island's favorite culinary creations.
